Engineering Manager – Reliability

The Engineering Manager is responsible for creating and developing analysis methods to determine maintenance and engineering demands for components, equipment, and processes and to determine the reliability of components for equipment and processes. The Reliability Maintenance Engineering Manager prepares diagrams, charts, drawings, calculations, and reports to define downtime problems and reliability problems and makes recommendations for reducing outages and for improvements. Duties also include full oversite of facilities projects from submitting to completion.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures full compliance with EHS standards, policies, procedures and processes for the areas of accountability. Confirms that incidents are thoroughly investigated and that root causes are identified and remedied on a systematic basis. Fosters a safe and healthy work environment for all employees;
  • Interfaces directly with all department such as, but not limited to, EHS, operations, process engineering, metallurgical, purchasing HR, and quality;
  • Continually improves the performance of the Manufacturing organization through the application of Business Systems (ABS) principles. This includes the development of a continuous improvement mindset within the Maintenance organization;
  • Develops annual maintenance and engineering plans in consultation with direct supervisors to ensure proper deployment of resources to achieve required levels of production and to meet customer delivery requirements;
  • Conduct analysis of downtime and reliability problems and investigate to determine the reliability approach and the personnel/equipment required for a particular situation, with considering cost limitations for equipment uptime/downtime, repair/replacement costs, and weight, size, and availability of materials/equipment;
  • Determine cost advantages of alternatives and develop action plans that comply with internal/external customer demands for reliable processes/equipment to avoid failures and that comply with customer demands for outages of processes/equipment;
  • Work under broad administrative instructions; provides in-house consulting activities to advise and counsel personnel on a variety of complicated processes/procedures, supported by detailed calculations and guided by cost-effective decisions and recommendations;
  • Establish good maintenance practices and trains others to transmit the concepts across the organization;
  • Plan, conduct and direct engineering research and development projects of major significance that are complex in nature and require an expert application of advanced engineering knowledge from several different fields;
  • Troubleshoot, analyze, identify, evaluate, propose, implement, and document maintenance and reliability plans and performance metrics; failure, analysis, and corrective action procedures; equipment capacities and risks; and other engineering solutions;
  • Develop, implement and support preventive, predictive, autonomous, and reliability centered maintenance strategies and plans for new and existing equipment;
  • Coordinates and directs the development and implementation of business plans and forecasts, securing corporate approval of selected goals and objectives, administering and following up to ensure successful accomplishment of the plan;
  • Provides leadership to subordinate managers and to all assigned employees. Ensures open communications and responds to employee concerns in an appropriate manner. Seeks to improve the knowledge, skill, and ability of people. Deals proactively with substandard performance;
  • Participates in purchasing personnel to develop partnerships with vendors which produce mutually beneficial arrangements related to purchased item quality, quantity, and pricing. Ensures that concerns and issues related to purchased resources are addressed and resolved in a timely manner;
  • Oversees all Capital Appropriation projects to ensure projects come in on time and on budget;
  • Analyzes and directs the preparation of Capital Appropriation Requests to secure required capital equipment for projects meeting or exceeding capital return targets;
  • Maintains full compliance with Company policies and procedures and conducts all activities in accordance with the Guide to Business Conduct;
  • Interacts positively and effectively with personnel, both internal and external to the organization. This may include shop floor personnel, management at various levels throughout the company, and governmental regulators;
  • Perform other work as assigned.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in reliability maintenance engineering.
  • Extensive experience in maintenance and engineering.
  • MBA or Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering is a plus.
  • Experience in metal-working manufacturing.
  • Experience putting a world-class maintenance and engineering team together with a focus on predictive and preventative maintenance systems.
  • Proven leadership and change management skills with proven track record of building and maintaining highly effective teams.
  • P&L experience and responsibility.
  • Ability to quickly learn and understand critical manufacturing processes.
  • Extensive experience in Lean Manufacturing.
  • Six Sigma and daily management.
  • Strategic thinker with excellent business acumen and intuition.
  • Well organized, resourceful and efficient.
  • Demonstrated positive, constructive leadership in a union environment.
